Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of Swedish international Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest in a deal worth £55 million, marking their first major attacking acquisition of the summer.
Newcastle have secured the services of 23-year-old winger Anthony Elanga on a long-term contract. The Magpies will pay £52 million upfront, with an additional £3 million in performance-related add-ons. The move ends Elanga’s impressive stint at Nottingham Forest, where he played a key role in helping the club achieve a UEFA Conference League qualification last season.
Elanga arrives at St. James’ Park with a growing reputation as one of the Premier League’s most explosive young attackers. He contributed 6 goals and 11 assists in 38 appearances for Forest last season, regularly tormenting defenders with his raw pace and quick decision-making. His versatility across the front line makes him a perfect addition to Eddie Howe’s system.
Forest had initially rejected multiple bids for the Sweden international but ultimately accepted Newcastle’s improved offer amid the player’s desire to take the next step in his career.
Elanga is expected to slot in on the right flank, forming part of a dangerous attacking trio alongside Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon. Manager Eddie Howe praised Elanga’s ability to stretch defenses and contribute both in transitions and in pressing phases.
"Anthony gives us another gear in the final third," Howe said. "He’s direct, incredibly quick, and has the intelligence to adapt to how we want to play."
With Champions League qualification in their sights and a desire to reduce attacking predictability, Elanga’s arrival gives Newcastle a fresh dynamic.
Elanga is expected to make his Newcastle debut in pre-season action later this month, with a possible start against Celtic on July 19. He’ll wear the No. 17 shirt and is already training with the first team. His first Premier League appearance for the Magpies could come on opening day against Brighton.
Newcastle’s business in the market may not be over yet, but Elanga’s arrival signals clear intent: the club is building a front line capable of challenging the Premier League elite.
