Barcelona Eye Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries as Right-Back Reinforcement

Published on Jul 03, 2025

Barcelona are pursuing Inter Milan right wing-back Denzel Dumfries as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2025–26 season. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Dutch international has emerged as a serious target, with a €25 million release clause in his contract valid until mid-July.

Manager Hansi Flick, who took charge last season, is keen to address Barcelona’s vulnerability at right-back. Currently, the role has been filled by Jules Koundé, a natural centre-back, and while reliable defensively, he does not offer the forward thrust Flick demands. Young La Masia graduate Héctor Fort is also in the picture but lacks the experience to take on the role full-time. Dumfries, 29, offers strength, stamina, and consistent attacking involvement characteristics Barcelona have lacked in that position.

Barcelona scouts were impressed by Dumfries' performance during last season’s Champions League semi-final at Camp Nou, where he scored twice in a 3–3 draw against the Catalans. His display under pressure has solidified his reputation as a big-game player, one Flick reportedly sees as ideal for his high-tempo, width-driven system.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Dumfries' €25 million release clause expires in mid-July, creating urgency for Barcelona to act. Inter Milan would be free to negotiate higher terms or retain the player if the clause lapses. Internally, Barcelona are evaluating financial options and may need to offload players to facilitate the deal.

While the club continues to navigate La Liga’s financial regulations, Dumfries is viewed as a strategic investment. His arrival would allow Koundé to return to centre-back, restoring natural balance across the backline while offering Flick a much-needed attacking outlet on the right.

Should Barcelona meet the clause in time, Dumfries would become one of their most significant signings of the summer—adding elite experience and positional clarity to a squad aiming to challenge domestically and in Europe once again.
