Borussia Dortmund Confirm Sale of Gittens to Chelsea

Published on Jul 03, 2025

Chelsea have officially secured the signing of J. Bynoe-Gittens from Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth £55 million, marking one of the standout transfers of the summer window. Dortmund confirmed the agreement on Tuesday, bringing an end to weeks of speculation around the future of the highly-rated 20-year-old winger.

The deal, which also includes add-ons, sees Gittens sign a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge that runs until June 2032, reflecting Chelsea’s long-term vision under new head coach Enzo Maresca.

Medical Completed in the US

With both Chelsea and Dortmund involved in the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, the transfer was finalized during the tournament. Gittens underwent his medical assessments in the U.S., and according to multiple reports, there were no issues in the process.

Although Chelsea were eager to add him to the squad for the ongoing tournament, FIFA rules prohibit him from playing, as he already featured for Dortmund in an earlier Club World Cup match. He will instead link up with the Chelsea squad officially after the competition.

Dortmund Statement Confirms Transfer

“There were one or two conversations with Chelsea, and we’ve now reached a full agreement. We wish Jamie all the best for this next step in his career.”
Sebastian Kehl, Dortmund sporting director said.

Gittens, who made 76 appearances and scored 12 goals for Dortmund, was previously on the books at Manchester City and Reading before moving to Germany in 2020.

Chelsea's Strategic Move

Jamie Gittens fits Chelsea’s transfer model perfectly—young, dynamic, and full of potential. The Blues have been aggressively targeting emerging talent since the change in ownership and see Gittens as a key piece of their future front line.

Manager Enzo Maresca reportedly pushed for the deal, eager to add more explosive width to a squad still in transition. With the futures of several attacking players under review, Gittens is expected to play a prominent role once the 2025–26 campaign kicks off.

Bayern and Newcastle Interest Turned Down

Chelsea weren’t the only club chasing Gittens. Bayern Munich submitted a £47 million bid, but it was swiftly rejected. Dortmund waited for Chelsea’s improved offer, which finally met their valuation. also, New Castle monitored the situation but never entered advanced talks.

What's Next?

The transfer is now official from Dortmund's side, with Chelsea expected to unveil the player in the coming days. Fans will have to wait for Gittens’ debut until after the Club World Cup, but excitement around the signing is already building.

As Chelsea continue their rebuild, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens is seen as more than just a squad addition he’s a statement of intent.
