Chelsea Strike First, but Collapse Follows

Published on Jun 20, 2025

Flamengo delivered a thrilling comeback to defeat Chelsea 3–1 on Friday night in their second match of the FIFA Club World Cup. The Brazilian giants overturned an early deficit at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia to secure their second straight win and take control of Group D.

Chelsea began the game brightly, striking first in the 13th minute through Pedro Neto. The forward capitalized on a swift counterattack and calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper, giving the Premier League side the lead. Chelsea appeared in control during the first half, but their advantage would quickly unravel after the break.

Flamengo came out for the second half with greater urgency and intensity, soon dominating possession and pushing Chelsea deeper into their own half. In the 62nd minute, Bruno Henrique brought Flamengo level with a smart finish after a defensive lapse by the Blues. Just three minutes later, Danilo put the Brazilians ahead with a powerful strike from outside the box, completely shifting the momentum of the match.

Chelsea’s night took a decisive turn for the worse when substitute Nicolas Jackson, on the pitch for only a few minutes, was shown a straight red card in the 68th minute for a reckless tackle on Ayrton Lucas. Down to 10 men and visibly shaken, Chelsea could not mount a meaningful response. Flamengo continued to press their advantage, and Wallace Yan completed the comeback with a third goal in the 83rd minute, finishing a sweeping team move that left Chelsea’s defense in disarray.

Flamengo coach Filipe Luís, a former Chelsea defender, praised his team’s performance and dominance after the final whistle, stating, “Flamengo is very superior… we pressed, controlled possession, and that told on Chelsea.” His counterpart, Enzo Maresca, acknowledged the collapse and lack of composure in the second half, calling it a disappointing performance that they would need to learn from.

Chelsea’s tactical adjustments, including pushing Reece James into midfield and shifting Cole Palmer wide, initially looked promising but ultimately disrupted their rhythm. Discipline became an issue, with multiple bookings before Jackson’s red card sealed their fate. Despite holding the lead early, Chelsea allowed the game to slip away through errors and a loss of focus under pressure.

With the win, Flamengo top Group D with six points from two games and are on the verge of qualifying for the knockout stage. Chelsea, with one win and one loss, now face a must-win situation in their final group match against Espérance de Tunis. Anything less than victory could see the English club eliminated from the competition.

The result continues an impressive run for Brazilian clubs at this year's expanded Club World Cup, with Botafogo, Fluminense, and Palmeiras all remaining unbeaten. Flamengo’s dominant second-half performance against a major European club highlights the quality and depth of Brazilian football, as the nation’s representatives continue to impress on the global stage.
