Club World Cup: PSG overwhelm 10-man Atlético Madrid in Rose Bowl stroll

Champions League winners Paris St Germain beat fellow European heavyweights Atlético Madrid 4-0 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on Sunday to get their Club World Cup campaign off to a winning start.

PSG landed the first blow when Fabián Ruiz fired home from distance in the 19th minute as they showed no signs of rust in their first match since trouncing Inter 5-0 to win their first Champions League title last month.

PSG doubled their advantage just before half-time when an Antoine Griezmann miss led to a counter-attack that ended with Vitinha firing home under sunny skies in southern California.

The La Liga side appeared to have pulled one back when Julián Alvarez found the net in the 57th minute but his goal was overturned after a VAR review determined Koke had fouled Désiré Doué in the leadup to the strike.

Substitute Senny Mayulu added a third goal for PSG in the 87th minute to end any hopes of an Atlético Madrid comeback, while Lee Kang-in fired home a stoppage-time penalty to round off the scoring.

Clément Lenglet was sent off for Atlético in the 78th minute.

Bayern Munich 10-0 Auckland City

Bayern Munich romped to a huge victory over Auckland City in their tournament opener, as Jamal Musiala scored a hat-trick in a 17-minute span.

Thomas Müller, Kingsley Coman and Michael Olise scored two goals each for the Bundesliga champions, who went ahead on Coman’s goal six minutes in. Bayern had a 17-1 advantage in shots on target.

Musiala replaced Harry Kane in the 61st minute, making his first appearance since April after recovering from a hamstring injury. He scored in the 67th minute, converted a penalty in the 73rd and scored again in the 84th.

Before a crowd of 21,152 at TQL Stadium, fans displayed a red-and-white banner referencing the 2015 raid by US law enforcement at a Zurich hotel that led to the arrest of a number of football officials: “10 Years Baur Au Lac — World Football Is More Poorly Governed than Before! Smash FIFA!”
