Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that J. Bynoe-Gittens ’ highly anticipated move to Chelsea is underway, with the winger having left Dortmund’s FIFA Club World Cup camp to finalize the deal. Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl admitted the transfer is “in motion,” effectively signaling the end of the English youngster’s stint in Germany.
After weeks of speculation, multiple top-tier sources now report that the deal is all but sealed, with Chelsea poised to announce Bynoe-Gittens as their latest signing.
According to Sky Sports and ESPN, Chelsea have agreed to pay $70 million for the 19-year-old, who will sign a seven-year contract with the Blues. The long-term deal indicates Chelsea’s confidence in Gittens’ development and potential impact in the Premier League.
Although the winger is now expected in London for his medical, he will be ineligible to play in the remainder of Chelsea’s FIFA Club World Cup campaign due to being cup-tied with Dortmund.
Bayern Munich were also monitoring the situation closely and were reportedly preparing to match Chelsea’s offer. However, Dortmund quickly shut down any interest from their Bundesliga rivals and moved forward with Chelsea’s proposal. This stance was consistent with Dortmund’s policy of avoiding strengthening domestic competitors, especially given their recent financial reshuffle.
The news of Gittens’ impending arrival has stirred mixed reactions among Chelsea supporters and neutral observers. Many have pointed to the club’s already crowded wing positions, questioning where Gittens will fit in amid the likes of Noni Madueke, Raheem Sterling, and Mykhailo Mudryk.
“There’s no way this many wingers are going to be happy with their minutes. Someone will have to go,” one fan posted on Reddit, reflecting growing concerns about Chelsea’s squad balance.
Nonetheless, the signing fits Chelsea’s recent model of investing in young, high-upside players with long-term contracts.
Jamie Bynoe-Gittens has long been touted as one of England’s brightest young prospects. A product of Manchester City's academy before moving to Dortmund, he developed under the club’s well-known player development system—similar to how Jadon Sancho once broke through.
His pace, dribbling, and ability to cut inside from wide positions make him a direct and dangerous winger, with high potential to grow into a first-team regular under the right coaching setup.
