Fluminense Beat Al Hilal to Reach Club World Cup Semi-Finals

Published on Jul 05, 2025

Fluminense have officially written themselves into FIFA Club World Cup history with a hard-fought 2–1 win over Al Hilal, securing their place in the semi-finals of the 2025 tournament. The Brazilian side continues their dream run, having already knocked out Inter Milan in the previous round, and now eliminating the Saudi Arabian giants who famously beat Manchester City.

Martinelli and Hércules Seal the Victory

In a tight and tactical quarterfinal clash in Orlando, it was Matheus Martinelli who opened the scoring in the 40th minute. Capitalizing on a defensive error from Al Hilal, the Fluminense midfielder calmly slotted past the keeper to give his side the lead going into halftime.

Al Hilal, fresh off their historic win over City, struck back just six minutes after the break. Marcos Leonardo continued his tournament form with a cool finish to level the game. But Fluminense weren’t done.

Substitute Hércules, introduced in the second half, became the hero when he netted the decisive goal in the 70th minute. It was a brilliantly worked move finished off with composure securing a 2–1 win and sending the Rio de Janeiro club into uncharted territory.

Historic Run Continues

This is Fluminense’s first-ever appearance in the Club World Cup semi-finals, and their journey so far has defied expectations. They outclassed Inter Milan 2–0 in the Round of 16 and now outworked an Al Hilal side loaded with experience and firepower.

Speaking after the game, veteran captain Thiago Silva expressed his pride in the team’s character and belief.

“If you asked me a while ago whether we would reach this stage… I wouldn’t say I wouldn’t believe it, because I believe in everything that I do. But this, this is special.”

A Brazilian Derby on the Horizon?

With Fluminense now waiting to face the winner of Palmeiras vs Chelsea in the next round, a potential all-Brazilian semi-final is on the cards. Regardless of the opponent, Fluminense have proven they can hang with the elite.

Their combination of tactical discipline, experienced leadership, and relentless pressing has set them apart from other South American clubs in recent Club World Cup editions.

Brazilian Clubs on the Rise

Fluminense’s progress is part of a larger narrative Brazilian clubs are asserting themselves on the global stage. With Palmeiras, Botafogo, and Flamengo all performing well in the tournament, South America is no longer just participating it's competing.

This semi-final spot is more than just a win; it’s a signal that Fluminense and Brazilian football are ready to challenge the traditional European and Middle Eastern dominance.
