Borussia Dortmund have booked their place in the FIFA Club World Cup quarter-finals after a gritty 2–1 win over Mexico’s Monterrey at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Striker Serhou Guirassy was the difference-maker, netting twice in the first half to help Dortmund advance to the next round.
The Bundesliga side wasted no time asserting themselves. Serhou Guirassy, signed last year from Eintracht Frankfurt, showed his quality with a quick-fire brace scoring in the 14th and 24th minutes. Both goals came from swift counter-attacks, with Dortmund catching Monterrey high up the pitch.
While Monterrey enjoyed more possession, it was Dortmund’s sharp finishing that made the difference early on.
The Liga MX side refused to go down quietly. In the 48th minute, German-born forward Germán Berterame pulled one back, giving Monterrey hope and setting up a nervy second half.
Despite holding 62% possession and registering 7 shots on target, Monterrey were repeatedly denied by Dortmund goalkeeper G. Kobel, who made six crucial saves.
Dortmund lined up in a 3–5–2 formation, focused on pace and transitional play. Kobel was composed and reliable in goal, while Bensebaini, Anton, and Süle formed a disciplined back three. Ryerson and Svensson stretched the field on the flanks, and the midfield pairing of Bellingham and Nmecha controlled tempo and distribution. Guirassy and Adeyemi led the frontline with intensity and movement, keeping Monterrey's defenders under constant pressure.
Monterrey dominated possession and attempted to dictate play through slow build-up, but lacked the final-third sharpness needed to breach Dortmund’s well-organized defense.
The result sends Borussia Dortmund into the quarter-finals, where they will face Real Madrid on July 5 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. With Madrid also grinding out a 1–0 win over Juventus, the clash promises to be one of the standout fixtures of the tournament.
Dortmund’s win was built on a clinical first half and a resolute second-half defensive display. While Monterrey may feel hard done by, Dortmund’s efficiency in front of goal and Kobel’s brilliance between the posts proved decisive.
As the Club World Cup heats up, Dortmund now stand just three wins away from global glory.
