Jordan Henderson Seals Premier League Return with Brentford Move

Published on Jul 16, 2025

Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has joined Brentford on a free transfer after leaving Ajax, marking his return to the Premier League.

Brentford have confirmed the signing of Jordan Henderson, bringing the 34-year-old midfielder back to English football after a brief stint with Ajax. The deal, officially announced on Monday, sees Henderson sign a two-year contract with the Bees, strengthening their midfield with experience, leadership, and a Premier League-winning pedigree.

A Familiar Stage for Henderson

Henderson’s return to the Premier League comes just six months after his move to Ajax, where he struggled for rhythm and match fitness. Prior to that, he had a short and controversial spell with Saudi club Al-Ettifaq. Despite the detour, the former Liverpool skipper has remained adamant that he still has more to offer at the highest level.

“I still have that hunger. I still feel I can contribute at this level. Brentford have given me that opportunity, and I want to repay their trust,” Henderson told club media.

Why Brentford?

Brentford’s decision to sign Henderson aligns with a broader squad rebuild following the exits of key senior players like Christian Nørgaard and Ben Mee. New manager Keith Andrews praised Henderson’s leadership and mentality, noting that his arrival brings balance and mentorship to a youthful team.

“Jordan’s professionalism and experience will be vital on and off the pitch. He’s coming in not just to play—but to lead,” Andrews said.

A Midfield Overhaul in Progress

Henderson is Brentford’s fifth signing of the summer, joining a group that includes:

  • Caoimhín Kelleher (Goalkeeper, from Liverpool)
  • Antoni Milambo (Midfielder, from Feyenoord)
  • Michael Kayode (Defender, from Fiorentina)
  • Romelle Donovan (Attacking Midfielder, from Birmingham City)

The club views Henderson as a stabilizing figure, someone capable of mentoring younger players while offering flexibility across the midfield roles in Brentford’s high-intensity setup.

England Aspirations Still Alive

Henderson was recently recalled to the England squad under new manager Thomas Tuchel, fueling hopes of a late-career return to the Three Lions setup ahead of the 2026 World Cup. A strong season in west London could place him firmly back in contention.

What Comes Next?

Henderson is expected to make his Brentford debut in early August, potentially against either Nottingham Forest or Sunderland, the club where he began his professional career. His return to Anfield where he captained Liverpool to Premier League and Champions League glory will be one of the season’s emotional highlights.
