Liverpool Smash Transfer Record to Sign Florian Wirtz

Published on Jun 20, 2025

Liverpool have completed the sensational signing of F. Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth £116 million, making the 22-year-old Germany international the most expensive transfer in the club’s history. The move also sets a new Premier League benchmark, surpassing Chelsea’s record fee for E. Fernandez.

Wirtz has signed a five-year contract with the Merseyside club and becomes only the fifth player to be transferred in the Premier League for over £100 million. He joins a Liverpool squad under new management, with Arne Slot now leading the club's ambitious new era after the departure of Jürgen Klopp.

The attacking midfielder arrives at Anfield after a remarkable season in which he scored 16 goals and provided 15 assists across 45 appearances. His creativity, vision, and composure helped Bayer Leverkusen to a historic domestic double, lifting both the Bundesliga title and Pokal. Widely regarded as one of the brightest midfielders in world football, Wirtz’s move is seen as a major coup for Liverpool as they look to re-establish themselves as title contenders.

Speaking after the announcement, Wirtz said: “I feel very happy and very proud. I want to win every year—from the Premier League to the Champions League. I’m really ambitious.” The German international revealed he turned down offers from , Real Madrid, and Manchester City, believing Liverpool was the right place for his development and aspirations.

The signing fits into Liverpool’s broader summer strategy, which has already seen the arrivals of right-back Jeremie Frimpong and left-back M. Kerkez. The club is also close to finalizing a move for Valencia goalkeeper G. Mamardashvili. Wirtz’s addition, however, is the crown jewel—a direct statement of Liverpool’s intent to build a new competitive core.

Wirtz has been capped 31 times by Germany and is expected to play a key role at the upcoming European Championship. At Liverpool, he is set to wear the iconic No. 10 shirt and is expected to operate as the central playmaker behind the forward line, a role that perfectly suits his technical and tactical profile.

His weekly wage is reportedly around £245,000, placing him among Liverpool’s highest earners behind Mohamed Salah and V. van Dijk. Still just 22, Wirtz is seen as both a short-term game-changer and a long-term investment as Liverpool rebuild with youth and flair.

This record-breaking transfer marks a new chapter for Liverpool. With Florian Wirtz anchoring the midfield, the Reds are now armed with one of Europe’s most gifted young stars and are poised to challenge again for silverware on all fronts.
