Nicolas Jackson Handed Two-Match Ban After Red Card in Chelsea’s Club World Cup Loss

Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson has been handed a two-match suspension following his red card in the Blues’ 3–1 defeat to Flamengo in the FIFA Club World Cup. The ban, confirmed by FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee, stems from a reckless studs-up challenge on Flamengo fullback Ayrton Lucas, just minutes after Jackson entered the pitch.

Initially expected to serve a one-match ban, the punishment was upgraded after FIFA reviewed the incident under Article 14(1)(e) for serious foul play, resulting in an additional match suspension. The decision is final and not subject to appeal.

Jackson will now miss Chelsea’s final Group D clash against Espérance de Tunis and a potential Round of 16 tie, should the Premier League club advance. His absence is a setback for manager Enzo Maresca, whose team needs at least a draw in their next match to progress to the knockout rounds.

The 24-year-old took to Instagram to issue a public apology, writing:

“Another red card… I’m so angry at myself… it wasn’t intentional. I take full responsibility.”

This marks Jackson’s second red card in just four appearances across all competitions, raising concerns over his discipline. However, Maresca offered reassurance, stating the incident won’t affect the striker’s long-term role at the club:

“No, the red card has nothing to do with Nico’s future.”

In addition to the Club World Cup suspension, Jackson is also ruled out of Chelsea’s Premier League opener, due to a separate red card picked up against Newcastle. His combined suspensions leave Chelsea short of attacking options, with Liam Delap and academy players likely to step in during his absence.

The incident underlines FIFA’s continued efforts to crack down on dangerous play, particularly in high-stakes international competitions. With Chelsea on the brink of progression, Jackson’s absence could prove costly at a critical moment.
