Published on Jul 03, 2025

Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota, 28, has died in a devastating car accident alongside his brother André Jota, according to a report by Marca. The fatal crash occurred late on the night of July 2, on the A-52 motorway near Cernadilla, in the province of Zamora, Spain.

Marca reports that the vehicle veered off the road and caught fire upon impact. Emergency services were called to the scene but confirmed that both Jota and his brother had died before help could arrive.

The tragic incident comes just over a week after Jota married his longtime partner Rute Cardoso. The couple shared three young children together. News of his death has sent shockwaves through the global football community.

Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolves and quickly became a key figure in the club's attack. He made 123 appearances, scoring 47 goals, and helped the Reds secure major trophies, including a Premier League title. For the Portugal national team, Jota had become a regular fixture since 2019, known for his sharp finishing, pressing intensity, and versatility across the front line.

His brother, André Jota, was also a professional footballer and played for Penafiel in Portugal’s second division. The football world has begun to mourn both men, with tributes expected from teammates, clubs, and fans in the coming hours and days.

Marca notes that authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash, but initial reports suggest a loss of vehicle control before the car left the road.

The death of Diogo Jota represents a profound loss not only for his family and teammates but for football at large. He was a rising figure in both domestic and international football, known not just for his goals, but for his professionalism, work ethic, and character.

Our deepest condolences go out to his wife, children, family, and all who knew and loved him.
